Jerrold Vitek, MD, PhD, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, comments on advances in the field of deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices. The development of devices that can sense neuroactivity, new lead designs to improve implantation, and new stimulation patterns are some of the technological advancements expected in the coming years. Dr Vitek believes that DBS advances will lead to personalized therapy for each patient, not only in Parkinson’s diseases but also in other circuit disorders.
